Martin's Cove

In keeping with Pioneer Day heritage, we visited some church sites of the early Saints. Our first stop after Mt. Rushmore was Independence Rock, Wyoming. After the pioneers had been run out of town because of religious beliefs, the 2 stories we heard is that the first pioneers got to this point on July 4th and celebrated Independence Day and called the rock Independence Rock. The other story says that the pioneers had to reach this rock by July 4th in order to make it to their destinations before winter set in. There are some names carved into this rock that are said to be pioneers who crossed and signed their name. The kids loved climbing to the very top of this rock w/ Doug. I am afraid of heights and would not venture up to the top, b/c we all know what comes up must come down.
The next stop for the Saints was a place called Devil's Gate. Many of the saints said it should have been named Heaven's Gate, because it was a heavenly site to see as the Sweetwater came through this mountain and cut this rock.

We then ended our church site tour with Martin's Cove. The church bought 102,000 acres from the Sun Family and it is now the Visitor's Center for this area. The kids got a taste of what the saints had to push/pull across the plains with these little handcarts.
We ended our little church history tour with church in a log cabin this morning at Martin's Cove. We stayed in Missionary village last night at their campground. After church, we packed up and moved west. We crossed the Willie Handcart site on the way to Dubois tonight.

How cool that your kids are experiencing this pioneer stuff first hand. These are days they will always remember. I hope good memories (is everyone getting along still?) Oh and the teacher assignments came in the mail this week. Sydney got Ms. Hull.
