Good Book to Share

This summer I determined for my kids to have fun but learn something while on vacation. I love the book "The Educated Child" by William Bennett. I reread it every summer as I compare what the kids learned during the school year, to what the national core says they should have learned. Because there just aren't enough hours in the day for teachers, sometimes they have to skim certain subjects. I love this book for this reason. I plan a summer enrichment program around the things they weren't able to get to during the year. Since Sam & Ash are the same curriculum, I give them each something different and then have them share with us and each other what they learned. So far, so good. I also buy the bridge workbooks from the Utah-Idaho Map Store, so they can work on all kinds of material that will bridge the gap from this year to the next school year. I just tell them that they have to complete at least 5 pages/week. They get going on it so much, that they forget and do a ton more. If you want a really great reference book to see how well your children compare with the national average, then this is a must for your library!
In keeping with the spirit of learning, I also decided to put away the fluff novels for the summer and pick up only books that will benefit me personally or my family in some way. Today as I was helping the kids pick out books at the library, this book caught my eye. I had read Gary Chapman's 5 Love Languages for Marriage a long time ago, but this one caught me for teenagers. I'm about 1/2 way through it already and I love it! It works for marriages too, so even if you don't have teenagers his advice works for all relationships. I'm hoping that with all this togetherness time we've got planned this summer, that I can keep my head about me and my sanity intact by preparing now!
