Memorial Day Weekend

We are in St. George, Utah for Memorial Day. Our plan was to go to Moab, but the weather looked nasty so we decided to go a little further south to a bit warmer weather. Though it hasn't been spectacular weather, it hasn't been too bad. Today we've been all over St. George.

We started our little tour of St. George at the Farmer's Market in their historic district. It was a quaint little market with homemade jams, jewerly, candy and candles. We were looking for some fruits/vegetables, but I guess it is just too early in the season for this. Next, we drove out to the site where the Meadow Mountain Massacre occurred. It was a little humbling to realize what had actually happened in that area and to think of all the reasons it did. Next, we headed back into town to see the summer home of Brigham Young. It has been preserved so well and is a great missionary site. Elder Sorenson who gave us our tour, retired with his wife down here about 4 years ago from Salt Lake. He was a great tour guide and even told us not to miss this wonderful sculpture display up at the St. George Temple's visitor center.

Well, of course we had to go. We were very glad we did. Angela Johnson, a new artist from Gilbert Arizona, one day felt inspired to buy some clay and try her hand at sculpting. She was a natural and created the most amazing sculptures of the Savior's life. The thing that struck me most of her sculpture besides the obvious subject, was the hands and faces in her sculptures. They were fascinating and so realistic. It was a sure testament of the divinity of our Savior and his knowledge of each of us individually.

Tomorrow our plan is to go to church and visit friends in the area: ReNee, a friend from nursing school, and Charlie, Doug's mission companion from Mesquite. Never a dull moment with the Ellis Fam. The RV is doing great, though we're questioning our plan for spending 7 weeks straight inside this RV w/ the kids.

I love going to the Mountian Meadows site, it is horrable what happened there, but it is so pretty, Pine valley is is a dream location. As you saw there the people killed were from Arkansas and so it is a big deal in Arkansas. I am not sure you ever saw but I was asked to do the Arkansas encyclopedia entry on the massacre. You can see it at http://www.encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encyclopedia/entry-detail.aspx?entryID=129. I took it as a blessing that I was asked, they wanted a hatefull entry (they did not know I was Mormon) but I made it fair.
